May 1, 1998 - the day we brought Lulu home

In February of 1998 I was at the Greenville dog show watching English Cockers when my breath was taken away by one of the specials being shown - Ch. Bellflower Maybe Marvelous. She was absolutely gorgeous - a light blue roan and tan with spectacular movement and ring presence. Later that day during a meeting of the Seaboard English Cocker Club I met her owner - Karen Roth of Georgia. I told her if she bred Emmylou I would love a puppy, and she said that Emmylou had just been bred to one of the breed's greats, BIS BISS Ch. Stardust Cimarron ECM. Over the next couple of months, with help from the breeder of our first ECS, Blackavar Newstead Abbey, I campaigned to get a puppy from the breeding, and was lucky enough to bring home Lulu. I can never thank Karen enough for taking a chance on a newbie and letting me have this unforgettable girl, or for her mentoring over the next few years.

Lulu delighted us in the show ring by going Best Puppy at the American Spaniel Club show in Jan., 1999 under Judge Bill Dwelly, handled by her breeder, Karen Roth, and finishing with three majors, shown by Karen's sister Joan, my friend Sue and even once in a while by me - truly a group effort! She was a wonderful producer and mother, free whelping two litters of 6 and 5, showing ME  how it was done. Her puppies have excelled in the show ring, as loving pets and even in obedience and agility. Most of all, she was a loving companion and soulmate - licking my face to wake me up in the mornings, happily sitting on my lap in the car watching the world go by on short trips around the neighborhood, joyfully playing with our other dogs and sons, laying on my legs in the recliner to watch tv, and every night laying her head beside mine on the pillow .

The shock and devastation of losing her and her best friend Zoe, my son's mixed Chow, in a house fire Feb. 27, 2003 are still with us. I miss her every single day.
